The Vietnam Red Cross launched an action month for Agent Orange (AO) victims and poor disabled people in northern Ha Tay province on July 4.

The organisation handed over gifts including new clothes and wheelchairs worth VND20 billion to needy people in Ha Tay, Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, Bac Giang, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong and Hung Yen provinces.

It said it will provide VND450 million between July 2006-July 2009 to help families of AO victims in Ha Tay, Bac Kan, and Quang Tri provinces to raise cows.

During the month, VRC chapters in localities will present saving books and wheelchairs, provide functional rehabilitation, give loans, hold vocational training courses, and build houses for the beneficiaries.

Since 1998, the Fund for Support of AO Victims has received VND148 billion from domestic and foreign organisations and individuals. Donors included Red Cross societies of Sweden, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Norway, Switzerland, the US, the Ford Foundation in Hanoi and the Belgium-Vietnam Friendship Association.
