A cold spell is forecast to affect the northern region on January 31, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre.

Although the spell causes the regional temperature to drop slightly, it will strengthen in the following four days, says the centre.

Over the past few days, the current cold front has moved eastward, triggering the south-eastern wind to regain its category and bring rains to the northern plain. Slight morning rains have helped break the prolonged drought in the area.

In the next two days, temperatures are expected to increase by 2-3oC to 23-25oC in the northern plain and 25-27oC in the northern mountain area.

It is still sunny in the central and southern regions, with temperatures staying at 25-33oC.
