650,000 Vietnamese employees working abroad

VOV.VN - There are roughly 650,000 Vietnamese labourers working in 40 countries and territories around the world, according to estimated data from the Department of Overseas Labor Management under the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

In recent years, the number of Vietnamese workers working overseas under contract has increased significantly, with nearly 153,000 people being sent to work abroad in 2019.

In 2020 and 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of guest workers dropped to 78,000 and 45,000, respectively over the years.

After the COVID-19 pandemic was brought under control in 2022, the number of Vietnamese guest workers increased again, with a total of 143,000 people.

During the past 9 months of this year, the total number of Vietnamese employees working abroad stood at more than 111,500 , meeting 101.37% of the 2023 plan.

Sending workers to work abroad under contract not only helps labourers, especially those in remote and difficult areas, improve their lives and their families, but also contributing to local socio-economic development.

Vietnamese workers are concentrated in markets such as Japan with about 300,000, Taiwan (China) with approximately 250,000, and the Republic of Korea (RoK) with 50,000 , while the remaining workers are based in European, Middle Eastern and Malaysian markets.

Vietnamese employees work abroad in many different types of jobs, primarily in the manufacturing sector, accounting for 80% including mechanics, textiles, footwear, and electronics assembly. The rest are in the fields of construction, agriculture, fisheries, and services, including care for the elderly, and sick people, and domestic help.

Nguyen Gia Liem, deputy director of the Department of Overseas Labor Management, said that Vietnamese guest workers have high and stable income alongside guaranteed working conditions.

In general, they are agile, intelligent and highly appreciated by employers, he added.
