The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has urged 25 northern, north-central, central highland and Mekong Delta provinces to vaccinate cattle against foot-and-mouth disease.

Accordingly, around 80 percent of cattle will be inoculated during the two campaigns: the first in April and May and the second in October and November.

According to the Department of Health under MARD, the four provinces of Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam and Ha Giang have reported cases of foot-and-mouth disease over the past 21 days – a period of time required to be free from the disease.

The Central Highland province of Dak Nong has spent VND7.2 billion controlling foot-and-mouth disease in cattle.

Ngo Quoc Hung, Head of the provincial Department of Animal Health, said nearly 30,000 cattle will receive inoculations in the near future.

Ninh Van Hieu, Head of the Nam Dinh provincial Department of Animal Health, said the province has vaccinated nearly 200,000 pigs, meeting 30 percent of the plan, and it will try to complete the task by the end of this month.

MARD has requested that the Prime Minister free provide vaccines and chemicals for provinces to disinfect the environment and prevent the spread of the disease.
