200 medical staff perform six overnight transplants from brain-dead donor
VOV.VN - Nearly 200 medical staff at Hue Central Hospital have worked through the night to successfully perform six life-saving tissue and organ transplants from a single brain-dead donor, offering new hope to critically ill patients.
The complex multi-organ procedure marked a major milestone in Vietnam’s transplant medicine, highlighting both advanced medical expertise and the humanitarian significance of organ donation, the hospital said on April 29.
The donor was a 44-year-old man from Hue, who was admitted on April 15 with severe traumatic brain injury following a traffic accident. Despite intensive treatment, his condition deteriorated and he was later diagnosed as brain-dead on April 16 after confirmation by a specialist council.
Following consent from the donor’s family, Hue Central Hospital’s Transplantation Centre coordinated with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Centre to urgently match recipients on the waiting list.
That same evening, transplant surgeries were conducted simultaneously in five operating rooms. Nearly 200 doctors and healthcare workers from multiple specialties participated in the overnight procedures, ensuring precision and speed throughout the operations.
According to the hospital, all recipients are recovering well. A 41-year-old heart transplant patient from Hue has regained consciousness and is now stable, with normal heart function and an ejection fraction above 60%.
A 64-year-old liver transplant recipient from Lam Dong is also recovering positively, with significant improvement in liver function and bilirubin levels returning to normal.
Two kidney transplant patients, aged 30 and 35 from Quang Tri and Da Nang respectively, are stable, with improved creatinine levels and good urine output.
In addition, two elderly patients from Nghe An and Quang Tri, previously blind due to corneal ulcers, underwent corneal transplants and have partially regained vision. Both have since been discharged.
The hospital said that within just one week, it successfully carried out a total of 14 transplants, including one heart, one liver, 10 kidney transplants (two from brain-dead donors), and two corneal transplants.
