16 Vietnamese youth selected for 2026 ASEAN-Japan Youth Programme

VOV.VN - Vietnam has officially announced its delegation of 16 exceptional young representatives who will participate in the 49th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Programme (SSEAYP) in 2026, one of the region’s most prestigious international youth exchange programmes.

The 16 selected delegates went through a rigorous screening process based on multiple criteria, including proficiency in English, deep knowledge of Vietnam’s history, politics, culture, society, and economy, as well as awareness of ASEAN, the ASEAN Community, Japan, and relations between Vietnam - ASEAN, ASEAN - Japan, and Vietnam – Japan.

The programme, due to last from January 15 to February 17, offers young people from ASEAN and Japan opportunities to join in discussion programmes and engage in cultural exchange activities together on board the ship named Nippon Maru, as well as courtesy calls, homestays, and field studies in some ASEAN countries.

Discussion topics for this year’s programme are derived from the implementation plan of the “Vision Statement on ASEAN–Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Trusted Partners”, adopted during the 50th commemorate summit of ASEAN–Japan relations in 2023. These topics include quality education, sustainable and responsible economic growth and tourism, global environment and climate change, disaster risk reduction and recovery, social welfare and inclusiveness, and digital society and artificial intelligence.

Launched in 1974 as a joint project between Japan and ASEAN member countries, SSEAYP is an annual international youth exchange programme organised collaboratively by the Government of Japan and 10 ASEAN member countries.

The scheme aims to promote friendship and mutual understanding among the youths of Japan and Southeast Asian countries, broaden their perspectives on the world, and strengthen their spirit of international co-operation and practical skills for international collaborations.

Vietnam officially joined SSEAYP in 1996 after becoming a member of ASEAN in July, 1995.
