Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA) Grand Slam opens

The Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA) Grand Slam officially opened in Phan Thiet City, southern Binh Thuan province on February 27.

Present at the opening ceremony were Hoang Tuan Anh, member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Huynh Van Ti, Chairman of the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Council and Jimmi Diaz, PWA President.

Nguyen Van Thu, Vice Chairman of the Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee and head of the Organising Board, said over the past 15 years since the solar eclipse occurred in Mui Ne in 1996, the charming scenery has become widely known as “the capital of resort” in Vietnam.

Thu emphasized that Mui Ne, famous for its 200km coastline and cool weather, has great potential for developing sea-sports, such as windsurfing. It has been chosen as one of destinations for PWA’s 12 competitions.

Minister Anh said the Grand Slam will offer prospects for development of maritime economy in Binh Thuan.

PWA president Jimmi Diaz said he was very pleased with the province’s preparations for the tournament and added that he would introduce his friends to this destination.

This year’s Grand Slam has involved more than 100 windsurfers from 26 countries and territories in the world to compete in Slalom and Freestyle events from February 26 to March 5.
