The book was written by French historian Dr. Pierre Journoud from Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne University.
“De Gaulle and Vietnam”, published by Tallandier Publisher in 2011, covers two resistance wars against French and American aggressors from 1945 to 1975 in Vietnam, as well as the first year of reunification in 1976.
Dr. Journoud developed ideas based on what he had collected from major international workshops in Paris in 2008 where he met experts and witnesses of the former two resistance wars.
Dr. Journoud and his colleague, Cecile Menetrey Monchau, gave explanations for the ending of the Vietnam War from the perspective of diplomats, recalling negotiations that forced the US to sign the Paris Peace Accord in 1973, as well as Victory Day on April 30, 1975.
The book also points out changes in General De Gaulle’s policies on the war in Vietnam, with worries, mistakes and regret.
This is a comprehensive study on the policy of General De Gaulle (1945-1969) based on numerous archives in France, the US and Canada that the author has drawn from and studied for many years.
After presentations on Vietnam’s war history, participants had a chance to watch a DVD recording of witnesses talking about secret negotiations in Paris to end the war in Vietnam from 1963 to 1973.
Dr. Journoud is a young scholar who has many significant works about Vietnam in his unique style. He is now a researcher of the French Institute of Strategic Research (IRSEM), and a member of the Asian history centre under Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne University.
