The Vietnam National Committee for Women's Advancement is working to increase the number of female deputies to the 12th National Assembly to over 33 percent.

At its 29th regular meeting in Hanoi on February 5, the committee also affirmed that it will focus this year on an expansive and intensive implementation of the 2006-2010 action plan for women's advancement.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice State President Truong My Hoa urged the committee to actively promote information dissemination to raise women's participation in the National Assembly, help improve the leadership skills and provide gender education for female candidates for the NA elections, and to raise women's awareness of Vietnam's international integration.

Ha Thi Khiet, President of the National Committee for Women's Advancement and the Vietnam Women's Association, affirmed that for 2007, the committee will constantly give the government and the Party Central Committee's Secretariat advise on the implementation of the Party Politburo's Resolution on women affairs, and draft a decree guiding the implementation of the Law on Gender Equality.

The committee will strive to improve the effectiveness of its cooperative work within the United Nations, APEC and ASEAN, and expand bilateral cooperation in gender equality related issues as well as in women's advancement related areas, she said.

Participants discussed a plan to monitor women's advancement activities in 2007. Under the plan, the committee will send 17 teams to 10 ministries and branches, 12 provinces and cities to inspect their implementation of the action plan for women's advancement, dissemination of the law on gender equality and encouragement of women's increased participation in the National Assembly.
