Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on December 23 ordered the construction of the Vung Ang 1 thermal power plant in Vung Ang open economic zone in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province.

The thermal power plant has two groups of turbin with a design capacity of 1,200 MW and a total investment of VND200,000 billion from the Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation (LILAMA). According to plan, the first group will generate electricity in the first quarter of 2011 and the second group one year after.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said after being put into operation, the Vung Ang 1 thermal power plant will provide 10 percent of the country’s total electricity output. This will provide enough electricity not only for Ha Tinh but also for other localities after 2011, ensuring the modernization and industrialization process of the country.  He asked the Ha Tinh provincial People’s Committee to cooperate with LILAMA to complete the project on time.
