An exchange entitled “Youth with journalism today” took place in the theatre of Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) in Hanoi on June 16 to mark the 84th anniversary of Vietnam’s Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1924 - June 21, 2009).

The event was organised by VOV’s Youth Union in coordination with other press agencies, such as Vietnam Television, Vietnam News Agency and the Nhan Dan (People) Newspaper, followed by a concert, praising the late President Ho Chi Minh and highlighting the role of the press.

Addressing the event, VOV General Director Vu Van Hien emphasised that with modern technology in an increasingly developed world today, VOV’s staff, especially young people, have to improve their professional skills and nurture their ethnics to confirm their role and uphold the fine tradition of their predecessors.

He went on to say that as a national radio, VOV is gradually developing into one of the most powerful radio stations in the region and the world. This depends a lot on its young staff, who are eager to broaden their knowledge and gain access to modern technologies.

During the exchange, veteran journalists recalled their career advancement in the old days and shared their experience with young colleagues. They also noted that to become an outstanding journalist, it is essential to constantly improve your professional skills, make more fact-finding trips and listen to critical opinions. However, they noted that, a good article must cover positive progress towards a better way of life.

On the occasion, the Youth Union also presented the certificate of merit to 20 young outstanding journalists who have made a great contribution to young people’s movements over the past two years. 20 outstanding students studying journalism were also presented with the Sao Viet (Viet Star) scholarship.

The exchange will be broadcast on VOV’s TV channel on June 21.
