The 65th anniversary of the Vietnamese People’s Army Day was celebrated on December 9 by the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese National Defense Attache in Australia.

In his speech at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Nguyen Thanh Tan reviewed the historic periods of the Vietnamese People’s Army in the resistance wars for national independence and during the Doi Moi (Renovation) process.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1973, multifaceted cooperation between the two countries in national defense and security has finely developed.

Australia opened the National Defense Attache’s Office in Hanoi in 1999 and Vietnam opened the same office in Canberra in 2000.

Apart from the exchange visits by high-level national defense delegations, the two sides have carried out different activities to promote the friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries’ people and armies.

Over the past few years, Australia has provided scholarships for Vietnam’s national defense officers and trainees and has helped Vietnam’s army cadres with English.

The promotion of bilateral cooperation in anti-terrorism, border control, transnational crime control, rescue activities, and overcoming the consequences of natural disasters and epidemics has contributed to deepening multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Australia.
