Vietnamese officer meets with Cuban Minister of Revolutionary Armed Forces

General Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA), and Deputy Minister of National Defence, on September 3, held a meeting with Senior Lieutenant General Álvaro López Miera, Minister of Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba, who is on an official visit to Vietnam.

Thanking the Cuban officer for attending the national ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and the National Day of Vietnam, Cuong underscored the exemplary, pure, and loyal ties between the two nations - a relationship tested by time and challenges over the past 65 years and regarded as a rare model in international relations.

He expressed sympathy for the hardships and challenges faced by the Cuban people due to blockade, embargo, and recent natural disasters, affirming that the Vietnamese Party, State, people, and VPA always stand ready to provide full support for Cuba.

He noted that the fundraising programme themed “65 Years of Vietnam – Cuba Solidarity” once again highlights the close relations between the two peoples and conveys a strong message to the international community that Vietnam always always stand alongside Cuba, just as Cuba has always stood alongside Vietnam.

The host officer stressed that the VPA General Staff will actively direct relevant agencies and units to comprehensively implement the three-year defence cooperation plan for 2026-2028 between the two nations; and foster twinning ties between corresponding agencies and units in line with each side’s conditions and capabilities.

Extending his best congratulations to Cuong and all officers and soldiers of the VPA on the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day, López Miera said the Cuban delegation was deeply impressed and moved by the strong national spirit and great patriotism of the Vietnamese people.

The Cuban guest affirmed that the September 2 grand parade not only showcased Vietnam’s military strength but also reflected the pride and patriotism of the Vietnamese people.

Discussing bilateral defence cooperation, López Miera expressed his hope that the two sides will continue to foster collaboration in areas of mutual potential and demand. He affirmed his personal commitment to further strengthening the close ties between the Cuban and Vietnamese armies.
