VOV.VN - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim held a phone call on December 12 to exchange views on bilateral relations, emerging regional and international issues and ways to lift two-way trade to US$20 billion.
PM Chinh welcomed the discussion with PM Anwar Ibrahim shortly after their meeting at the Summit, highlighting the value of their regular phone exchanges in facilitating timely coordination and information sharing on issues of mutual concern. He noted that this shows growing political trust between the two countries in general and between the two leaders in particular, in line with the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Regarding future cooperation, both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive progress of the Vietnam-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and agreed to soon formally approve the 2026-2030 Action Program to implement the partnership. The program outlines specific directions for each key sector and aim to bring bilateral trade toward a more balanced target of US$20 billion.
The Government leader proposed strengthening cooperation in rice trade, maritime and ocean affairs, with priority given to oil and gas cooperation between PetroVietnam and Malaysia’s Petronas, joint fisheries initiatives, and the prevention of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
On regional and international issues of shared concern, both leaders expressed deep concern over the recent tensions between Cambodia and Thailand, while calling for restraint, peaceful dialogue, and avoidance of force. They agreed to closely coordinate with other ASEAN member states to reinforce unity, uphold ASEAN’s centrality, and utilize ASEAN mechanisms to promote dialogue, thus contributing to regional peace, stability, and cooperation.
