Vietnamese diplomat states importance of international efforts to stop terrorism

VOV.VN - Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, deputy head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, noted the significance of regional and international co-operation as a means of rooting out terrorism and preventing potential conflicts, while participating in the UN Security Council (UNSC)’s online meeting held on November 23 to discuss counter-terrorism.

The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed that the nation will continue to vehemently condemn terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations whilst fully committing to carrying out the UNSC’s resolutions on terrorism prevention and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

He therefore put forward a suggestion that regional and international collaboration efforts should be ramped up as a means of developing the economy whilst simultaneously enhancing the ability of communities to competently deal with the dangers caused by extreme violence and the spread of radicalisation.

Ambassador Anh requested that the UNSC’s Counter-Terrorism Committee (Committee 1373), the Al-Quaida Sanctions Committee, and committee on prevention of proliferation of WMD (Committee 1540), move to intensify information sharing and technical support for countries as a means of implementing the UNSC’s resolutions. This is in addition to providing timely support to nations to fully respond to emerging challenges in the fight against counter-terrorism and preventing deadly weapons from falling into the wrong hands.

Other UNSC members also expressed their concern over terrorist groups such as ISIL and Al-Qaeda, who are taking advantage of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as a means of increasing their operations in conflict zones.

They went on to hail sound co-ordination activities among members of the committees, saying they should strive to support competent sides in order to realise the UNSC’s resolutions.

The UNSC’s committees were set up as a means of supporting the implementation of its resolutions with non-permanent members taking charge of the committees’ chairmanship. Currently, Tunisia is playing the role as the Chairman of Committee 1373, and Indonesia is Chairman of Committee 1267 and 1540.

Vietnam is in the process of taking on the chairmanship of the UNSC’s South Sudan Sanctions Committee, the Lebanon Sanctions Committee, and Informal Working Group on International Tribunals.
