Vietnamese diplomat optimistic about growing ties with New Zealand
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son showed great joy at the strong development of Vietnam-New Zealand relations, especially since the two countries upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership during New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s visit to Vietnam in February.

At a meeting with New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters on June 9, held on the sidelines of the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice, southern France, Deputy PM Son called on New Zealand to further open its market to Vietnamese agricultural exports. He also emphasized the need to diversify supply chains and work toward lifting bilateral trade to US$3 billion by 2026, while doubling two-way investment. He urged continued official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam and stronger cooperation in education.
The two ministers agreed to intensify efforts to carry out the outcomes of the February visit and to swiftly develop an action plan to carry out the upgraded partnership framework.
Foreign Minister Peters welcomed Vietnam’s role as ASEAN–New Zealand Coordinator and expressed hope for deeper cooperation to push up ASEAN–New Zealand relations, with a view to establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the near future.
The two sides also discussed stepping up coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and international organizations. This includes backing Vietnam’s candidacies for key United Nations bodies, strengthening New Zealand’s cooperation with Mekong subregional mechanisms, and expanding Vietnam’s cooperation with Pacific island nations.
