Vietnam,Azerbaijan seek stronger cooperation

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has said Vietnam and Azerbaijan had discussed a score of measures to promote bilateral ties in the time to come.

Deputy PM Minh told the media after talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Hanoi on Wednesday, September 13, that the two countries have maintained a traditional political relationship. He made several proposals to further bilateral cooperation.

“Both sides consented to increase the efficiency of the Vietnam-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation. Oil and gas is a key area of our cooperation and efforts should be made boost cooperation in transportation

Vietnam always places importance on developing cooperative ties with traditional friends, including Azerbaijan", he said.

Minh hailed the achievements the Azerbaijani people have recorded during the process of national modernisation and development, helping Azerbaijan strengthen its role in the international arena.

The ministers agreed to continue increasing the exchange of visits at all levels and speed up negotiations to soon sign agreements on investment and mutual recognition of product quality, thus completing the legal basis for bilateral partnership. 

They expressed their delight at the steady growth of two-way trade in recent years, which reached US$104 million in 2016 and jumped to US$114 million in the first half of this year. 

The ministers welcomed the successful organisation of the first meeting of the Vietnam-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Committee for Economic-Commercial and Scientific-Technological Cooperation in January 2017, and vowed to continue upholding the efficiency of this cooperation mechanism. 

They stated that the foreign ministries of Vietnam and Azerbaijan should continue cooperating and coordinating effectively by holding regular dialogues and consultations on issues of shared concern. 

On regional and global issues, the ministers shared a view that territorial disputes must be settled through peaceful measures in line with international law as a contribution to maintaining peace, stability and development in the region and the world. 

During the talks, two Foreign Ministers agreed to settle East Sea issues through peaceful means and respect for international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister is on a working visit to Vietnam from September 12-15.
