Vietnam welcomes US decision to postpone reciprocal tariffs for 90 days

VOV.VN - Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang has described the US administration’s decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days on several partners, including Vietnam, as a positive step.

At a regular press briefing in Hanoi on April 10, in response to a question regarding the US administration’s move to delay the imposition of reciprocal tariffs, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that “We believe that the US decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days on export goods from various countries, including Vietnam, is a positive step.”

According to Hang, in the spirit of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, Vietnam will work with the US to negotiate a reciprocal trade agreement based on mutual respect, aiming to reach satisfactory solutions for fair, sustainable trade that benefits both peoples and businesses.

She added that on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US, both countries will carry out a wide range of commemorative activities in 2025, including delegation exchanges at various levels.

On the evening of April 9, President Donald Trump unexpectedly decided to postpone the tariffs for 90 days and reduce the baseline tariff rate to 10% for all countries, except China, where the rate will be raised to 125%.

More than 75 countries had contacted US agencies, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Treasury, and the Office of the US Trade Representative, to negotiate solutions to issues related to trade, barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-tariff measures.

Since these countries had not taken retaliatory action, President Trump decided to suspend the reciprocal tariffs for 90 days and apply a baseline 10% tariff for other US trading partners.

Under the new tariff policy, the US imposes a 10% duty on most imports as of April 5 and a 25% tariff on imported cars from April 3. From April 9, some 60 countries with large trade surpluses with the US will face tariffs of up to 50%.
