Vietnam, US seek to further deepen bilateral ties

VOV.VN - Vietnam and the United States are discussing a score of measures to further deepen relations between the two countries.

Spokesperson for the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said in a statement at a routine press briefing on August 17 in Hanoi.

According to spokesperson Pham Thu Hang, over the past time, the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US has developed extensively, effectively, and practically in all fields of bilateral relations, as well as in other multilateral mechanisms.

"The two countries' senior leaders have reached a consensus and the two sides are discussing measures to further deepen bilateral relations in a stable, substantive and long-term direction, towards a new level of relations when conditions are appropriate, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and in the world," said Hang.

Vietnam and the US first established a comprehensive partnership on July 25, 2013. After 10 years, the comprehensive partnership and joint relations have been developing extensively, effectively, and substantively across multiple fields.

Each field of co-operation has its own highlights in terms of politics and diplomacy, as well as mutual understanding and respect which has increased markedly.

The two sides have always shown respect for each other's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions. The two countries maintain the regular exchange of delegations and high-level contacts.

Economic-trade relations are the fastest growing and represent both the strongest pillar and the driving force behind ties in general.

Over the past decade, two-way trade turnover has increased more than five times, rising from US$25 billion in 2012 to nearly US$139 billion in 2022, with Vietnam having risen to the position of the seventh largest trading partner of the US in the world.

US investment in Vietnam is continuously increasing, with investment of Vietnamese enterprises in the US also becoming a trend.

Regarding citizen exchanges, there are currently between 23,000 and 25,000 Vietnamese students studying in the US every year. Indeed, before the COVID-19 pandemic the figure had reached more than 31,000 annually.

Vietnam is the leading country in Southeast Asia and the fifth in the world with students studying in the US, whilst tourists from this market are among the top five in terms of the number of international visitors to the Southeast Asian nation.
