Vietnam and the US held their 16th dialogue on human rights in Washington DC on November 9-10.

The two sides openly and frankly exchanged views on issues of mutual concern, including religious freedom, freedom of opinion and expression, and the building of the law-governed state.

Their discussions were also focused on the right to employment, racial discrimination, fulfilment of international commitments to human rights, and the possibility of cooperation in this field.

The Vietnamese representatives briefed their hosts on Vietnam’s achievements in ensuring human rights, particularly its socio-economic development achievements, the implementation of regulations on democratic practices, the rapid development and increasing role of the press in all aspects of life, as well as people’s rights to freedom of religion and belief.

They also made clear misleading information that does not reflect the truth of the current situation in Vietnam.

Luong Thanh Nghi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on November 25 described the dialogue as useful, and said such dialogue should be conducted in the spirit of frankness, constructiveness and mutual respect, helping to promote mutual understanding and narrow differences between the two countries.
