Vietnam, UK look to expand all-around cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnam and the UK are looking to expand cooperation across a variety of fields, as Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met UK Ambassador to Vietnam Iain Frew in Hanoi on April 6.
At the meeting, the host leader hailed positive progress in bilateral ties, as seen in record two-way trade in 2025, along with cooperation in defence and security, climate change response, education and training, and the sharing of experience in building an international financial centre in Vietnam.
PM Chinh affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to strengthening relations with the UK, welcomed the UK’s contributions to the region, and noted coordination between the two countries within ASEAN and the United Nations.
He also welcomed the establishment of the highest-level partnership framework- the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership-during Party General Secretary To Lam’s official visit to the UK, and thanked the UK Government for providing vaccines during the Covid pandemic, supporting Vietnam in settling the consequences of storms and floods, and cooperating in climate response, disaster prevention, and development projects in remote and ethnic minority areas.
Applauding the contributions of Ambassador Iain Frew and the UK Embassy in Vietnam to boosting bilateral cooperation, PM Chinh said there is still ample room for further cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, finance, education and training, science and technology, defence and security, energy transition and climate response, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. He also proposed facilitating visas for Vietnamese citizens, starting with visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders.
In response, Ambassador Frew praised Vietnam’s socio-economic and foreign affairs achievements amid global and regional challenges. He affirmed that the UK stands ready to contribute to Vietnam’s development goals in the coming period, particularly in green transition, digital transformation and energy transition.
The ambassador also expressed appreciation for the Government chief’s continued involvement and clear direction in pushing Vietnam-UK relations, and consented to work closely with Vietnamese ministries and agencies to effectively implement the contents of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the outcomes of Party General Secretary To Lam’s visit to the UK.
He agreed with PM Chinh’s proposal to continue increasing exchanges of delegations at all levels, especially high-level exchanges across all channels, to strengthen political trust.
The UK will continue to cooperate with and support Vietnam in developing an international financial centre, expand training cooperation between universities of the two countries, and promote English as a second language in schools in Vietnam, thereby strengthening cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, while helping the Vietnamese community in the UK integrate well and serve as a bridge between the two countries.
On multilateral cooperation, both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing dialogue based on respect for international law to maintain peace and stability in the region and the world, including ensuring freedom, security and safety of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, a maritime area of major importance to international trade.
