Vietnam supports the international community and the Arab League in promoting peace and national reconciliation in Syria for the benefit of national construction and development.

Ambassador Le Hoai Trung, permanent representative of Vietnam to the United Nations made the statement at the 16 February meeting of the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution on Syria.

Ambassador Trung expressed Vietnam’s concern about the escalating violence and socio-political instability in Syria, which is seriously affecting the people’s lives in the country.

Vietnam supports the international stance on the need to abide by the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and international laws, particularly the principles of respect for other countries’ independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and of non- interference in their internal affairs, he said.

The diplomat also voiced Vietnam's support for the international community's efforts in calling on concerned parties to exercise self-restraint, end violence, and find political solutions through constructive dialogue and national reconciliation, thus meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Meanwhile, UN General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued their own statements on the resolution.

Mr Al-Nasser affirmed the international community’s solidarity with the Syrian people as well as UN member nations’ willingness to help Syria maintain its stability. He called for coordinated efforts to find an urgent solution to conflicts in the Middle East nation.

In his speech prior to the vote of the UN General Assembly, Syrian ambassador Bashar Ja’afari said no countries allow terrorist groups to operate on their territory. Therefore, the UN General Assembly’s biased resolution is not in line with the current situation in Syria.

He added that the latest developments in the country have satisfied its people’s requirements in which a national dialogue and referendum on the new constitution will be held on February 26.

The Syrian ambassador also called on other countries to stop their interference in his country’s internal affairs.
