Vietnam supports the efforts made by the Government of Sri Lanka in restoring territorial integrity, national stability and in combating terrorism, said head of the country’s mission at the UN, the WTO and other international organisations in Geneva.

Addressing the 11th Special Session of the Human Rights Council on “The Human Rights Situation in Sri Lanka”, Ambassador Vu Dung congratulated the Government and people of Sri Lanka over the recent historic development in the country.

He said he hopes that this development will definitely put an end to a long-term conflict and hostilities, bring about lasting peace and stability in Sri Lanka and enable the country to concentrate its efforts and resources on national reconciliation, reconstruction and development, thus contributing to peace and stability in the region.

Ambassador Dung said Vietnam holds that the post-conflict issues should be resolved by the people of Sri Lanka themselves. The international community should do all it can to assist this process.

Vietnam has noted with appreciation that the Government of Sri Lanka has closely cooperated with and received significant support from the international community in its long-term struggle against terrorism and the protection of its territorial integrity, he said.

He called upon the international community to cooperate with and assist Sri Lanka in its reconstruction efforts.
