President Nguyen Minh Triet on January 14 sent his condolences to Haitian President Rene Preval for the human and material losses caused by an earthquake on January 12.

The quake, the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years, may have killed hundreds of thousands of people in Port-au-Prince.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pham Gia Khiem, in his capacity as chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations also sent his sympathies to Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Alrich Nicolas.
