"Although the State of Vietnam respects the right to freedom and democracy of all citizens, the country never accepts abuses of these that violate Vietnamese law," said Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Dung.

Spokesman Dung made the statement on March 9 while answering reporters' questions on the wrongful remarks made by the Human Rights Watch on the situation in Vietnam in its March 9 press release.

"The Human Rights Watch regularly produces fabricated information that fails to reflect the real situation in Vietnam. We totally reject the wrongful remarks made by the Human Rights Watch in its press release on March 9, 2007," said Mr Dung.

"In Vietnam, there is no political crackdown, no one is arrested for his or her political viewpoint, only those who violate the law will be dealt with according to Vietnamese laws. The so-called "crackdowns on dissidents" are absolute nonsense," the spokesman reaffirmed.
