State President Nguyen Minh Triet and his Ukrainian counterpart, Viktor Yanukovych have agreed on regular meetings between the two countries’ leaders and senior officials to boost bilateral cooperation.

During their meeting in New York on September 22 (local time), President Triet affirmed that Vietnam wants to strengthen relations with Ukraine in various areas.

The Vietnamese community in Ukraine and those who have studied and worked in the European country will become a bridge to promote friendly relations, he added.

For his part, President Viktor Yanukovych said that the two countries treasure traditional relations and have many similarities which he described as favourable conditions to boost bilateral cooperation.

Ukraine wants to promote ties in all areas, particularly trade, construction, shipbuilding, telecommunications and vocational training, with Vietnam as well as to develop ties with ASEAN.

On the same day, President Triet met with overseas Vietnamese and American friends, briefing them on Vietnam’s socio-economic development, major events in the country and the ties between Vietnam and the US.

He attributed the country’s achievements to contributions by the Overseas Vietnamese, including those in New York, and American friends who stand side by side with the Vietnamese people.
