Vietnam, Mexico boost parliamentary diplomacy on 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties

VOV.VN - Legislative bodies of Mexico and Vietnam will continue to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy to contribute to the consolidation of their traditional friendship, especially as both celebrate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties (May 19, 1975 – May 19, 2025).

During a meeting with newly appointed Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai on March 13, President of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies Sergio Carlos Gutiérrez Luna expressed support for the establishment of the Mexico-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group. He viewed this as a significant milestone to further promote relations between the two countries' legislative bodies in the time ahead.

Welcoming the positive progress in bilateral relations, Gutiérrez Luna emphasized that Mexico is keen to foster ties with Vietnam across all channels, particularly in boosting economic, trade, and investment cooperation.

Regarding the activities marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025, he affirmed that the Mexican Chamber of Deputies is willing to support the Vietnamese Embassy in coordinating cultural events at the legislative headquarters. These events will highlight Vietnam's image and the Vietnam-Mexico relationship.

Expressing gratitude for the positive remarks and sentiments towards Vietnam, the Vietnamese diplomat noted that throughout its struggle for national independence and development, Vietnam has received invaluable support from the international community, including friends in Mexico.

This solidarity was demonstrated when Mexico became one of the first Latin American nations to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam at a time when the Vietnamese people had just achieved victory in their struggle for independence and national reunification. Mexico also sent a shipment worth US$1 million to help Vietnam overcome the war’s aftermath and rebuild the country.

Affirming that Mexico is one of Vietnam’s leading partners in Latin America, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai highlighted the expanding bilateral ties in a multitude of fields, from politics and economy to cultural diplomacy. He also underscored their mutual support at international forums such as the United Nations (UN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and multilateral parliamentary platforms.

During the meeting, the ambassador expressed his hope that the two countries' legislatures will intensify high-level delegation exchanges on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. This, he said, would contribute to stepping up cooperation between the two law-making bodies as well as propelling Vietnam-Mexico bilateral relations forward.
