Vietnam, Mexico boost inter-parliamentary cooperation

(VOV) - A Vietnamese delegation from the National Assembly’s (NA) Committee for Science, Technology, and Environment—led by its Chairman Le Bo Linh—has paid a four-day visit to Mexico, promoting inter-parliamentary cooperation and exchanging legislative experiences related to science and technology.

During the visit, which ran from November 28 to December 1, the delegation met with leaders from Mexican agencies, the Senate, and the Chamber of Deputies. They praised the socio-economic milestones Vietnam has achieved in recent years, highlighting the 7 percent economic growth rate and its contributions to improving people’s living standards.

Mexico is keen to learn from Vietnam’s experience in agricultural restructuring, agricultural biotechnology, and sustainable natural resource management. Mexico prioritises trade and investment cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in aquaculture and agricultural production.

Eloy Cantu Segovia, Chairman of the Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs, proposed establishing a Vietnam-Mexico Parliamentary Friendship Group that could serve as a bridge to tighten legislative ties.

Chairman Linh said that Vietnam is willing to support Mexican agriculture, adding that Vietnam wishes to be a friendly and reliable partner of all the world’s countries. He noted Mexico can boast a developed economy and a vast market very appealing to foreign investors.

Vietnam wants to form relations with Mexican parliamentary agencies to share experiences in building laws and policies related to science, technology, the environment, and infrastructure development, he said.

Vietnam currently allocates 2 percent of its annual budget, or nearly 0.5 percent of its GDP, to developing science and technology. In its ten-year development strategy, the country is targeting pushing social investment in science and technology to 1.5 percent of GDP, focusing on promoting business investment and advancing the technology sectors.
