As neighbouring nations of Myanmar, Vietnam and other ASEAN countries are interested in Myanmar’s developments, because these developments are an indispensable part of peace and stability in the region, said Ambassador Bui The Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, at a roundtable discussion on Myanmar in New York on September 20.
Vietnam called on all parties in Myanmar to cooperate together more closely and effectively for the sake of peace, stability, prosperity and development in the country and the region as well, he stressed.
“Vietnam is ready to help Myanmar when necessary and in line with the ASEAN Charter ratified by all the ASEAN member countries, including Myanmar” Giang stressed.
The roundtable meeting on Myanmar was co-chaired by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin, special advisor to the UN Secretary General on Myanmar Vijay Nambiar and President of the Asian Society Vishakha Desai.
The event drew representatives from the ASEAN countries, China, Russia, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Norway, the US, the EU and UN bodies such as the UN Development Progamme.
Participants heard reports on the situation of, prospects for and the role of the international community in reforms in Myanmar. They acknowledged the efforts of the Myanmar Government and people as well as the role of ASEAN, UN and the international community and pointed out immediate and long-term challenges to the country.
