Vietnam and Laos have agreed on a plan to upgrade the system of demarcation markets along their borders.

The two sides have fixed demarcation points for 119 markets and built 17 land markers, and will continue to examine over 100 points and plant another 140 markers in the remaning months of 2009.

During the second round of the joint committee for landmark planting between Vietnam and Laos held in the Lao province of Champasak from September 30-October 1, the two sides said they will locate 210 markers and have an additional 237 planted in 2010.

In order to speed up the landmark planting, they will set up three more landmark planting teams, two from Laos and one from Vietnam.

A number of regulations on organisation and landmark planting techniques were also signed at the meeting, which proceeded in an atmosphere of friendship, solidarity and mutual understanding.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son, who is also head of the Vietnam Steering Committee for local landmark planting. The Lao delegation was led by Bounkeut Sangsomsak, who is in charge of the Lao Steering Committee for local landmark planting.
