Vietnam, Laos seek stronger comprehensive cooperation
Vietnam and Laos have agreed to further strengthen cooperation between their legislative bodies at multilateral parliamentary forums, aiming to promote the ties of friendship and all-round cooperation.
National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung and his Lao counterpart Pany Yathotu held talks in Vientiane, Laos on July 3 immediately after a welcome reception the same day.
During the talks, Lao NA Chairwoman Yathotu praised Mr Hung’s visit and Vietnam’s tremendous achievements over the past few years, which have helped elevate the country’s status in the region and the world.
NA Chairman Hung said he hopes that, following the clear-sighted leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), the Lao people will continue to gain even greater achievements in their renewal process towards a socialist orientation.
The two NA leaders affirmed their determination to preserve and bring into full play the time-honoured special solidarity and trust between the two Parties, NAs and peoples, considering it an invaluable asset to pass down to the following generations.
Both sides agreed to enhance comprehensive cooperation based on the spirit of independence, self-reliance and the principles of equality and mutual benefit, in order to improve the quality and efficiency of cooperation for the sake of peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.
They also consented to boost bilateral cooperation in various fields, maintain high-level meetings and exchanges at all levels and step up communication about the special Vietnam-Laos relationship, especially for the younger generations.
After their talks, Mr Hung and Mrs Yathotu signed a cooperation agreement between the two NAs under which both sides will continue to consolidate the ties of traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive bilateral and multilateral cooperation. They said they will work together on specific activities to ensure the practicality and efficiency of their mutual cooperation programmes.
These programmes will focus on exchanging delegations of NA leaders, female NA deputies and parliamentary friendship groups, as well as supervising the signing and the implementation of international treaties between the two countries.
Both sides will continue to coordinate closely at regional and international parliamentary forums, exchange legal documents of common concern, and support each other in training personnel and developing human resources and scientific research.
