Vietnamese and Lao officials have held an annual meeting in Vientiane to discuss border issues.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Vu Dung, Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the Border Department of the Foreign Ministry while the Lao delegation was led by Phongsavath Boupha, Deputy Foreign Minister and head of the Laos-Vietnam Border Committee.

The two sides agreed that over the past year, relevant ministries, branches and localities of both countries have closely coordinated activities, effectively implemented the Agreement on Border Regulations and other agreements on the border and territories. Security and social order has been maintained in the two countries' border areas, creating favourable conditions for socio-economic development, although both sides acknowledged that several problems remained in border management.

The two sides also discussed and agreed on cooperation direction in the coming period: to complete the demarcation of the remaining border; to finalise a project that would plant more landmarks on the Vietnam-Laos border with the aim of submitting it to the two Prime Ministers for approval for implementation in 2007; to promote cooperation in combating drug related crime and the trafficking of women and children in the common border areas; and to establish mechanisms for promoting cooperation in investment, trade, tourism and culture between the two countries' border provinces.

During their stay in Laos from December 28-31, the Vietnamese delegation was received by Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavath Lengsavath.
