Vietnam wishes to develop its friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Singapore, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.
Khiem made the statement during talks with Singaporean Prime Minister George Yeo, who is on a visit to Vietnam from May 22-25 and to attend the 9th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi.

He added that Singapore is one of Vietnam ’s leading trade and investment partners and suggested that the Singaporean government continue to encourage its businesses to increase their investment projects in Vietnam and facilitate the entry of Vietnam’s exports into the local market.

For his part, Minister Yeo said that Singapore attaches a great deal of importance to its relationship with Vietnam and wants to continue enhancing long-term links with the Southeast Asian country.

While praising Vietnam ’s socio-economic development achievements in recent years, he expressed belief that the country will soon overcome the negative impacts of the on-going global economic and financial crisis and take its economy to a new level of development.

The two sides expressed their satisfaction at the strong development of bilateral ties, especially in politics, economics, trade, investment, education and training, security and defence and tourism, as well as the implementation of the Vietnam-Singapore Connection Agreement.

They also spoke highly of the effective operation of the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP 1 and VSIP 2) in southern Binh Duong and the expansion of the model in northern Bac Ninh province and Hai Phong city, considering this an outstanding symbol of the fine relationship between the two countries.
The two ministers said they were pleased with the effective cooperation between the two foreign ministries and agreed to boost their cooperative mechanisms in the future such as the fifth political consultation at the deputy foreign ministerial level and the first exchange between the two foreign ministries in Hanoi in 2009.

After the talks, Deputy PM Khiem and his Singaporean guest witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Central Institute for Economic Management and the Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the Singapore Institute for Asian Competition, which aims to improve competitiveness, economic management and training.
