The Vietnam National Assembly (VNA) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) jointly opened an Asia-Pacific regional conference in Hanoi on December 10 to strengthen the role of parliaments in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The two-day conference, which has attracted parliamentary delegations from IPU members in the Asia-Pacific and specialists from international organizations, provides a venue for regional parliamentarians to exchange and share their experience in legislation, and supervision of anti-HIV/AIDS efforts.

It is also expected to strengthen the strategic alliance between parliaments and the United Nations and international organizations in fighting the deadly disease.

Participants are discussing a series of issues such as trends and future predictions on HIV/AIDS in the region, policies and laws regarding those most vulnerable to the disease, challenges being faced by lawmakers and legal aspects related to minimizing the impact of the pandemic.

Addressing the conference, Vice Chairwoman of the VNA Tong Thi Phong underlined Vietnam’s deep awareness of the extreme danger posed by the pandemic, saying that the country has introduced many policies and measures to curb it.

Ms Phong added that Vietnam supports other governments, socio-political organizations and occupational societies and communities in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. She stressed that no nation has sufficient resources to deal with the pandemic on its own.
