Addressing a UN plenary session in New York on August 19-20 to discuss severe flooding in Pakistan, Mr Giang, who is also deputy head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN, shared his deepest sympathy with the Government and people of Pakistan over the huge human and material losses caused by the ongoing floods.
He appreciated the international community’s solidarity, cooperation and assistance to Pakistanis and said overcoming the aftermath of this natural calamity requires consideration of the immediate and long-term economic, social and environmental impact.
He announced the Vietnamese government’s decision to provide relief aid and said Vietnam will collaborate with the international community to better cope with this disaster to ensure residents’ lives will get back to normal as soon as possible.
So far the floods, the worst in Pakistan in 80 years, have killed nearly 1,500 people and affected approximately 20 million others. Nearly 1 million houses have been destroyed.
