Vietnam insists on solving disputes through peaceful means

VOV.VN - Vietnam consistently adheres to the principle of solving disputes through peaceful means, said Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, at the UN Security Council meeting on Role of Reconciliation in Maintaining International Peace and Security held in New York on November 21.

Ambassador Quy said that the lack of awareness of the importance of reconciliation and ineffective reconciliation, contributes to the persistence of conflict worldwide.

He added that the parties concerned best know the root causes of the conflict, noting that it is they who must first engage in the process.

The success of the process hinges on trust and long‑term goals, which can only be achieved through a comprehensive approach to political, social, economic and justice issues, said Quy.

Addressing the meeting, Secretary‑General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said that trust-building, respecting truth, and ensuring related parties’ voices clearly heard are important factors in the reconciliation process.

Meanwhile, member countries said that the principles of respecting independence and sovereignty, and non-interference must be ensured, while the root causes of conflicts must be addressed fairly.
