Vietnam and Indonesia should increase the exchange of parliamentary visits in the years to come, said National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Kien.

Mr Kien made the suggestion while meeting with the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Agung Laksono, in Jakarta on April 27.

Mr Laksono voiced his support for the increase of information sharing between the two parliaments to improve their operational efficiency.

The Vietnamese legislative leader, who is visiting Indonesia from April 26-30, spoke highly of recent cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia and between the two legislatures in particular. He expressed his hopes that these cooperative ties would develop more fruitfully in the future.

Both Vietnam and Indonesia hold important positions in the region and the two nations possess a huge potential for further development, he said, noting that although two-way trade has progressed in recent years, it has yet to find its full potentials, he said.

The lawmaker stressed that Vietnam appreciates Indonesia’s position as the region’s largest country with the biggest population and a founder of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The same day, Mr Kien paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly, Hidayat Nur Wahid, who praised the level Vietnam’s development as well as its contributions to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Vietnamese delegates also worked with the Institute for Asian Economic Research and the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Education and Information to share experience in research and policy making.
