The agreement was reached at talks between the visiting Deputy Defence Minister, Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, and his Indonesian counterpart Sjafie Siamsoeddin in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 15.
At the talks, Lt. Gen. Vinh informed the host of Vietnam’s preparations for the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) that is slated for mid-October in Hanoi, and other countries’ feedback.
The two sides discussed issues of mutual concern to bring into play ASEAN achievements in enhancing defence cooperation with its dialogue partners to ensure regional stability, peace and development.
Deputy Minister Vinh spoke highly of Indonesia’s active and responsible role in developing the bloc as well as building the ASEAN Community. He also congratulated Indonesia on its presidency of ASEAN and Indonesia’s Defence Ministry on its presidency of ADMM+ in 2011, confirming that Vietnam will support and assist Indonesia in organising related conferences.
As current Chair of ADMM and ADMM+, Vietnam wants Indonesia organise conferences of ASEAN senior defence officials and related events aimed at promoting humanitarian relief as well as cooperation in sea security, army medicine, anti-terrorism and peace maintenance, said Vinh.
Also on September 15, Deputy Defence Minister Vinh and his entourage paid a courtesy visit to Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro.
