The Vietnam, India inter-governmental committee on economic, trade and science and technology cooperation held its 13th meeting in New Delhi on February 27.

Under the co-chair of Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem and India's Minister of External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee, the two sides agreed to work hard to lift their traditional relations to a new height. Vietnam and India will increase the exchange of high-ranking delegations, following the Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung's up coming visit to India.

India affirmed its support of Vietnam's candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council during the 2008-2009 term. For its part, Vietnam also backed India's wish to become a member of an extended UN Security Council.

In terms of trade, Vietnam and India agreed to raise bilateral trade turnover from more than US$1 billion in 2006 to US$2 billion in 2010.

The Indian side promised to create more favourable conditions for Vietnamese imports to the Indian market.

As for investment, the two countries agreed to coordinate to improve the use of India's Official Development Assistance (ODA) fund as well as encourage bilateral investment. They committed to expanding co-operation in the areas of energy, oil and gas, mining, biotechnology, information technology, agriculture, health care, remote sensing, oceanography, and human resource training for Vietnam's software industry.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of the 13th Vietnam, India joint-government committee meeting, a 2004-2006 bilateral cooperation review and a 2007-2009 Vietnam-India action plan.
