Vietnam improves gender equality policy
US senator Lisa Brown praised Vietnam’s improved implementation of gender equality policy at a meeting with Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and National Assembly Vice Chairperson in Hanoi on September 14.
At a reception with the female delegation from Washington, Ms. Ngan welcomed the delegation’s visit to Vietnam and expressed her hope that the delegation will be a bridge between Vietnamese and American women to share opinions and strengthen cooperation.
Ms. Ngan said that Vietnam has organised many activities to fight discrimination, protect women’s rights, promote gender equality and create conditions for women to join all social fields.
The Vietnamese Government approved the national strategy on gender equality in the 2010-2020 period with an aim of narrowing the gender gap in economics, politics, labour and employment, as well as encouraging women to undertake management positions.

Ms. Ngan expressed her delight with the excellent cooperative relations between Vietnam and the US and hoped that the delegation will help promote multilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Ms. Brown congratulated Vietnam on its successful organisation of the 13th National Assembly election. The high number of female deputies (accounting for 24.4 percent) demonstrates the country’s policy in implementing gender equality policy, ensuring women’s rights and fighting discrimination, she added.
She said that when the delegation returns to the US they will promote and encourage further improvements in cooperative relations with Vietnam to the American people.
