Vietnam will host a Senior Officials Meeting on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Drug Control among Greater Mekong Subregion countries by 2010.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong on June 8 authorised the Ministry of Public Security to work with relevant ministries and departments, which are members of the National Committee for AIDS, Drugs and Prostitution Prevention and Control, MOU member countries and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to prepare for the event.

According to the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP), in 1993 a co-operation framework among Greater Mekong Subregion countries was formed among China, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos to deal with the complicated problem of drug production and use.

Vietnam joined MOU in 1995 and became an active member. Thanks to joint co-operation, Vietnam has worked with member countries to destroy poppy fields and develop other crops while cracking down on drugs rings.
