Vietnam highlights political solutions, peacekeeping effectiveness at UN

VOV.VN - Vietnam has underscored the central role of political solutions and put forward three key priorities to enhance the effectiveness of United Nations peacekeeping operations during a debate at the UN on November 5.

Addressing the General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) session on peacekeeping review, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, emphasized that peacekeeping remains a crucial tool for maintaining international peace and security, protecting civilians, and supporting political processes.

To improve operational efficiency, the Vietnamese representative outlined three priorities. First, political solutions must remain at the center, with missions assigned clear, feasible mandates in line with UN principles, while transitions and troop withdrawals must be based on ground realities and closely coordinated with host nations.

Second, priority must be given to ensuring the safety and security of peacekeepers and enhancing responses to emerging threats without budget cuts impairing mission effectiveness. Third, cooperation between the UN and regional organizations should be strengthened, alongside capacity-building for troop-contributing countries and the promotion of women's full, equal, and meaningful participation.

Welcoming the UN Secretary-General’s review report on the future of UN peace operations, Vietnam stressed that recommendations should be thoroughly examined by member states in a constructive and inclusive manner, emphasizing the role of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34).

Highlighting Vietnam's active contributions through the deployment of military, police, medical, and engineering personnel, including female peacekeepers, the diplomat affirmed that Vietnam will continue to work closely with the UN and international partners to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of peacekeeping operations.

At the session, UN representatives underscored the important role of peacekeeping in maintaining international peace and security while highlighting rising challenges posed by complex conflicts, emerging security threats, and financial constraints. They also noted ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency, ensure personnel safety, and advance reforms to better meet new requirements.
