France plays an important role in linking Vietnam with the European Union and in turn Vietnam is willing to serve as a bridge between France and ASEAN member countries and contribute more to the cooperation between the two regions.

The statement was made by State President Nguyen Minh Triet while granting an interview to Paris Match magazine in Hanoi on April 2.

The Vietnam-France relations have been developing well in all areas, said Mr Triet adding that France has strong economic potential and shares common cultural similarities with Vietnam.

“After the success of the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, and becoming a model in the region, Vietnam wants to contribute more to ASEAN-EU cooperation” said Mr Triet.

The president urged French investors to prioritise support for Vietnam in key areas such as personnel training for key technology industries, law, healthcare, urban management, environment, infrastructure development, agriculture and food processing.

“Pour investment into Vietnam and Vietnam welcomes French investors,” he said.

According to the Ministry of Planning and Investment, France now has 177 operational investment projects in Vietnam capitalised at US$2.2 billion. It ranks 9th among 77 countries and territories investing in Vietnam and second among EU investors after the Netherlands. In addition, France is top among EU countries that continuously increase official development assistance (ODA) for Vietnam.

After the current visit to Vietnam, Paris Match magazine plans to publish a special issue to introduce Vietnam's development and open-door policies, as well as its land, people, business environment and tourism potential.
