The Vietnam Farmers’ Association (VFA) organised its third national congress to promote patriotic emulation movements and honour outstanding farmers in Hanoi on September 15.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung, the Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation, Ha Thi Khiet, leaders from some centrally-run ministries and sectors and 300 delegates representing more than 10 million VFA members throughout the country were all present at the event.

In his speech, Mr Hung praised outstanding farmers’ for their practical contributions to the cause of national industrialisation and modernisation in the past five years.

The Deputy PM underscored the need to multiply these exemplary role models in patriotic emulation movements to contribute more to agricultural and rural development.

Currently, nearly 3.4 million farmer households have received the title of outstanding farmers in recognition of their effective business performance.

80 percent of the Vietnamese population are farmers, playing an important role in ensuring the sufficient supply of human resources for the development of the agricultural industry and services. Therefore, the VFA needs to encourage Party organisations, administrations and farmers to boost agricultural and industrial development by applying advanced technology to increase the productivity and efficiency of industrial sectors towards modern rural areas, said Mr Hung.

The average income of a farmer household making good business is VND160 million per year, and at the highest, nearly VND7.6 billion per year.

Mr Hung presented the Government’s Emulation Flag to the VFA and Mrs Ha Thi Khiet presented the Order of Labour, second class to two individuals. Three individual were also awarded the title of National Emulation Fighter and 79 others were awarded the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Merit.
