Vietnam, EU discuss effective implementation of comprehensive strategic partnership
VOV.VN - Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung held a phone conversation on March 6 with Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, to discuss Vietnam-EU relations and regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Kallas congratulated Le Hoai Trung on assuming his new position and the important responsibilities entrusted to him by the Party and State of Vietnam.
Expressing satisfaction that Vietnam and the EU had recently upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during the Vietnam visit by European Council President Antonio Costa, the EU High Representative praised the prospects for cooperation between the two sides.
She noted that Vietnam and the EU have many opportunities to expand cooperation in the coming period, particularly in areas such as maritime security and the protection of critical maritime infrastructure.
Kallas also expressed her wish to meet Minister Le Hoai Trung during the ASEAN-EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, expected to take place in Brunei, to continue discussions on issues of shared interest.
For his part, Le Hoai Trung thanked Kallas and appreciated her important contributions to promoting and developing Vietnam-EU relations in recent years.
Informing his counterpart about the outcomes of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Vietnam’s major development goals toward 2030 and 2045, the FM reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to its ties with the EU and its member states.
He noted with satisfaction that bilateral ties have continued to see positive development, with political trust steadily strengthened.
Economic, trade and investment cooperation remains a key driver of the relationship. The EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) has delivered positive results, helping make Vietnam the EU’s largest trading partner in ASEAN, while the EU has become Vietnam’s fourth-largest trading partner. Cooperation in science, technology and innovation is emerging as a new strategic pillar.
The Vietnamese diplomat proposed that both sides continue to strengthen mutual understanding and political trust, expand trade and investment cooperation, and boost collaboration in science and technology.
The two sides agreed to maintain close exchanges and coordination to effectively implement the Vietnam-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, while bolstering cooperation between the EU and ASEAN in the coming period.
Regarding the East Sea, both sides stressed the importance of respecting international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and maintaining peace and stability in the region and the wider world.
