Vietnam deeply concerned over China – Philippines ship collision

VOV.VN - The country is keeping a close watch on and is deeply concerned about information regarding the recent ship collision between China and the Philippines near the Bai Co May (Second Thomas Shoal).

Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the statement on June 21 in reply to a reporter’s query on the Vietnamese reaction to the June 17 incident.

The nation calls on relevant sides to exercise maximum restraint, behave in line with international law, respect sovereign rights and jurisdiction over coastal countries’ exclusive economic zones and continental shelves as defined in line with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and seriously and fully implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), Hang said.

They should respect and observe international rules relating to the safety of navigation and aviation, as well as the prevention and control of collisions and crashes at sea. In line with this, all parties should settle disputes and differences by peaceful measures, thereby contributing to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the region, the official emphasized.
