Vietnam committed to striving for int’l disarmament

(VOV) -Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, has affirmed Vietnam's strong support for comprehensive and complete disarmament, particularly nuclear disarmament.

Nga raised her voice at the general debate of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the 69th UN General Assembly in New York on October 13.

She noted in the current context when international security is experiencing many complicated situations, the international community should make greater efforts in disarmament, with a focus on settling disputes through peaceful solutions in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.

The Ambassador regarded this as a crucial premise for states and the UN to deal with disarmament-related issues, make preparations for the coming conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 2015, start negotiations on important treaties on fissile material, and ensure security of non-nuclear countries.

Nga emphasized Vietnam’s strong commitment to coordinating with other countries to realize the common goal of disarmament, underscoring the point Vietnam always strictly implements relevant obligations in this area.

The Vietnamese diplomat also expressed thanks for valuable supports from countries and partners that have helped Vietnam successfully perform its role as Chair of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Board of Governors in the 2013-2014 tenure.

The first Committee is a major agency of the UN General Assembly that takes responsibility to discuss and consider disarmament-related issues and international security. In the agenda of this year's session, which will last until December, the Committee will review more than 50 items, including urgent issues on prevention of the placement of weapons in outer space, and the risk of nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.
