Vietnam chairs international discussion on peaceful use of nuclear energy
VOV.VN - On April 29, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, during the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Vietnam chaired an international discussion on the use of nuclear energy to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on technology, capacity and financing for nuclear applications.
The event was co-sponsored by several countries, with more than 100 delegates attending from NPT member states and relevant international organisations.
Speaking at the opening, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang laid stress on the practical contributions of nuclear energy in healthcare, agriculture, industry, food and energy security, as well as climate change response.
As developing countries face limitations in capacity and resources, she called for greater international cooperation and ensuring equitable access to nuclear technology and applications.
Vietnam called for greater technology transfer, human resource training and mobilising sustainable financing, while emphasising the coordinating role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
At the discussion, participants shared experiences and proposed ways to strengthen international cooperation and improve access to technology and financing, while pointing to the potential of solutions such as small modular reactors for developing countries. Delegates also expressed appreciation for Vietnam’s initiative in organising the event.
The discussion highlighted the role of the pillar on the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the NPT, while affirming that nuclear technology, if effectively governed and equitably accessible, can contribute to growth and innovation.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Vietnamese delegation also held a number of bilateral meetings with leaders of international organisations and partners to boost cooperation in science, technology, energy and sustainable development.
