Vietnam chairs consultations ahead of 11th NPT Review Conference
VOV.VN - Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, chaired consultations with regional groups and member states at UN offices in Geneva on March 9–10 in his capacity as President-designate of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nucle
During the working visit, Ambassador Do Hung Viet held consultations with NPT member states from the Non-Aligned Movement, the Eastern European Group and the Western European and Others Group. He also conducted bilateral consultations with China, Russia, the UK, France and the US.
The Ambassador also chaired and spoke at an event organised by the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and the European Union (EU) on preparations for the NPT Review Conference.
Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, the WTO, and other international organisations in Geneva, also took part in the activities.
At the meetings, representatives of countries and international organisations welcomed Vietnam’s role as President of the 2026 NPT Review Conference, particularly as the international security environment grows increasingly complex.
Many countries called on Vietnam, in its role as President, to approach the issues in a balanced, constructive and practical manner and affirmed their readiness to coordinate closely with the President to achieve substantive outcomes at the conference.
Member states also reaffirmed the value of the NPT and its review process in maintaining international peace and security and promoting sustainable development. The consultations focused on issues requiring attention at the conference, particularly nuclear disarmament.
As conflicts continue and tensions rise in several regions, many countries laid stress on the urgency of achieving concrete outcomes at the review conference. They reaffirmed the commitment of member states to the NPT and to the global regime on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, while emphasising respect for international law, the peaceful settlement of disputes, the prevention of arms races and the need to prevent the threat of nuclear war.
Speaking at the consultations, Ambassador Do Hung Viet underscored Vietnam’s strong commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities as President of the NPT Review Conference, ensuring that consultations and discussions are conducted in a fair, open, inclusive, transparent and effective way.
He called on countries and the international community to make every effort to find common ground and sustain dialogue, including on issues where deep differences remain, in order to achieve substantive outcomes and strengthen confidence in the NPT.
Many countries also expressed deep concern about the impact of ongoing conflicts and regional flashpoints on the NPT review process, particularly the situation in the Middle East.
However, they stressed that the NPT is the only nuclear arms control mechanism currently in force with the participation of all permanent members of the UN Security Council. All countries therefore need to make maximum efforts to ensure substantive outcomes at the conference.
