Vietnam, Cambodia review ties at 9th political consultation in Hanoi
VOV.VN - Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong and Cambodian Secretary of State Ung Rachana co-chaired the 9th Political Consultation between the two countries’ foreign ministries on July 17 in Hanoi, under an agreement between the two sides.

During the meeting, the two officials updated each other on recent domestic situation, reviewed the implementation of high-level agreements and directives, and discussed measures to further strengthen bilateral ties. They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive progress in bilateral relations, especially since the February 2025 meetings between the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Standing Committee of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), as well as the trilateral summit among the top leaders of the Parties of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Political and diplomatic ties have continued to deepen; defence and security cooperation remains a solid pillar; and economic, trade, and investment co-operation has expanded significantly.
Two-way trade surpassed US$10 billion in 2024 and reached over US$6 billion in the first half of 2025. Cooperation in other areas such as education and training, culture and tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and locality-to-locality co-operation has also grown in a more diverse and substantive manner.
Building on these achievements and adapting to new circumstances, the two sides agreed to enhance their close political ties, deepen defence and security cooperation, expand trade, and strengthen connectivity in transportation, border gate infrastructure, and people-to-people exchange. They also pledged to boost capacity building, improve coordination in land border demarcation and marker planting, manage shared borders effectively, and deal with legal documentation issues for people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia.
The two ministries consented to work toward the signing of new cooperation agreements, and to prepare well for upcoming high-level visits and bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including the expected visit of CPP President and Senate President Hun Sen to Hanoi for the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, the 21st meeting of the Vietnam–Cambodia Joint Commission, and the 13th Conference on Cooperation and Development between border localities
The two sides also had in-depth discussions on regional and global issues, including the East Sea matters and Mekong cooperation, and reaffirmed their commitment to continued coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, particularly within the United Nations, ASEAN, and Mekong sub-regional mechanisms.
The two heads of delegation hailed the strong cooperation between the foreign ministries of Vietnam and Cambodia. In recent years, both ministries have played a proactive bridging role in promoting inter-sectoral and locality-to-locality cooperation, thereby helping to consolidate and deepen bilateral relations. They also pledged to further strengthen coordination between functional units of the two ministries and confirmed that the 10th Political Consultation would be held in Cambodia in 2027.
